There is a growing global mood today characterised variously as alarm, stress, anxiety, even dread—let’s call it tension! The root of the word is ten-, meaning “stretch”. C. G. Jung describes the soul movement of stretching in relation to psychic opposites when he says that “the tensions they generate for the most part remain unconscious, but can appear in dreams…. the ever-widening split between conscious and unconscious increases the danger of mass psychosis. With the loss of symbolic ideas the bridge to the unconscious has broken down.” He calls the culminating moment in this stretching or tension, “enantiodromia”. And as I will show here this enantiodromian soul movement can happen at the local scale or the global scale. In fact I will show how they are the same soul movement.
