Trump the Saviour

If you search YouTube for dreams and Trump, a lot of results come up (3.5 million). Although many people are dreaming of “Trump”, dreams are considered irrelevant to the political process today, irrelevant because meaningless or entertaining. Nobody it seems, pays any attention to dreams when considering politics, finances, the economy etc.
Wrong!
There are people and groups who do listen to their dreams and engage in political action based on their interpretation of their dreams. One such group comprises the Evangelists who seem immune to any view of Trump other than their own. This alt-right view, now expanded into an ideology which has generated highly successful political action, springs from a single dream of one of their Televangelists, in 2017. His name is Pat Robertson and his dream provides us with a way to understand how the dream, typically consigned to oblivion by our culture in the West, remains a determinant in the current political outcomes of our concrete lives. Read on ….
In 2017, Televangelist Pat Robertson had a dream (NOVA magazine, Oct 6, 2017):
God came to me in a dream last night and showed me the future. He took me to heaven and I saw President Trump seated at the right hand of our Lord.
Being a fundamentalist, Robertson naturally took the dream literally and quickly appropriated the dream to his belief system, leading to statements like these: “disagreeing with President Trump is heresy because God works on behalf of him” or “anyone who criticizes God’s anointed leader, President Trump they are also attacking God.”
This is no joke! A dangerous ideology is at work here, rooted in a naïve attitude towards dreams and their meaning (i.e. a dream means whatever serves my power interests). What would happen, I wondered, if we stuck more closely to the dream and the psyche’s possible intention, rather than assimilating the dream to the extreme purposes that Robertson already has in mind?
In the place of Jesus we now have Trump, i.e. seated at the right hand of God. Jesus Christ has been the highest, most sacred value of the Christian West, the supreme principle of order, truth, and meaning, and the symbolic centre, around which Western culture and society has been organised for millennia. According to Robertson’s interpretation, those supreme values are now transferred to Trump, since the dream shows Trump in the place of Jesus. It does not occur to Robertson that the psyche may be showing him an embodiment of what values he and many others, perhaps the West itself, NOW unconsciously hold as supreme, to be revered above all other values, including traditional Christian ones. Trump definitely holds some values above all others. He has spoken them openly to us. Let’s listen to HIs Sermon on the Mount (called the bully pulpit today). The principal sermon concerns GREED:
My whole life I’ve been greedy, greedy, greedy. I’ve grabbed all the money I could get. I’m so greedy. But now I want to be greedy for the United States. I want to grab all that money. I’m going to be greedy for the United States.
Or perhaps you prefer the words of Gordon Gekko (2011):
greed for lack of a better word is good
greed is right
greed works
greed clarifies cuts through
greed captures the essence of evolutionary spirit
greed in all of its forms
greed for life for money for love knowledge
has marked an upward surge of mankind
Robertson and the Evangelists have fallen prey to their own unconsciousness. While they consciously profess traditional Christian values, we can see that the psyche suggests that they are worshipping an entirely new set of values embodied as one Donald Trump.
Already in the news we can see the subterranean muck oozing forth from the weakest link in the greed chain: Michael Cohen!

  1. Also, John, your piece reminds me of something the Reverend Jerry Falwell once said. Calling for a total war against all Muslims, he said (with a smirk): “In the name of the Lord, blow ’em away!”

Behold! Robertson, Falwell, et al., are the “Fathers,” modern geomancers laying the foundations of the contemporary church!

  2. Thanks Paco, I have added a paragraph at the beginning, still fighting on behalf of the maligned psyche, cast aside and forgotten. It’s all I can think of doing now. I appreciate your comments very much.
